Paragon Software partners with Idealstore to deliver an unparalleled level of protection and backup portability for Windows servers, virtual machines, databases and desktops

AUSTIN, TX and IRVINE, CA — February 7, 2012—Idealstor, a leading manufacturer of removable disk-to-disk backup solutions, announced today that they are now offering Drive Backup Server software from backup and recovery publisher Paragon Software Group as an integrated component of all of their backup systems.  Combining the best attributes of Idealstor and Paragon, this new offering promises to deliver an unparalleled level of protection and backup portability for Windows servers, virtual machines, databases and desktops.

Idealstor manufactures removable disk backup systems that are designed to replace or augment tape backup by using SATA disks as portable backup media.  Systems range in capacity from 1 removable drive bay up to 8 with the ability to use up to a 4TB disk per bay (max system capacity currently 32TB).  Unlike most disk to disk backup systems on the market today that are simply designed for storing data like NAS, SAN or RAID, Idealstor uses a combination of hardware and software making the disks ejectable so they can be sent offsite for storage and disaster recovery.

With the addition of Drive Backup Server from Paragon Software Group, Idealstor is now able to offer a revolutionary hardware solution that lets you fully recover your servers or virtual machines anytime, anywhere.  Drive Backup Server from Paragon Software utilizes sector-based backups, giving server administrators the ability to image an entire server including files, data and applications. When the backup is complete, Paragon lets you dial in the level of recovery you need including file-based recovery, bare metal system restore and even individual email recovery for Microsoft Exchange.

“We are happy to welcome Idealstor as our newest partner,” said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. “Idealstor hardware paired with our Drive Backup Server software provides a complete turnkey solution for customers.”

Traditionally these Paragon system images were sent to local disk storage, which could then be backed up to tape or the cloud to store this critical data offsite.  By combining Paragon’s software with Idealstor removable disk media, images can now be backed up straight  to portable disk media, which in turn can then be stored in any location — offering  companies a truly powerful and flexible backup and disaster recovery solution.

“We are very excited to announce our partnership with Paragon Software Group and to be able to offer their award winning disaster recovery software with our backup systems,” said Nandan Arora, chief technology officer at Idealstor.  “We’ve been in the backup game since 2003 and have never come across a more complete software solution.  By bundling Paragon’s Drive Backup Server with our removable disk hardware we feel we have an unmatched solution in the market that will allow our customers and channel partners even more options when it comes to protecting their critical data.”

About Idealstor

Paragon Software and Insight Integrated Systems partner to bring a solution to companies suffering from storage perfomance issue due to partition misalignment

Irvine, CA, January 8, 2011 — Paragon Software Group, developers of disaster recovery software and system optimization utilities, announced today that the company partnered with Insight Integrated Systems (IIS), a division of Insight Investments LLC, the industry expert in technology solutions and financing options, to provide the Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) to companies suffering from disk drive partition misalignment. Insight Integrated Systems will also offer Paragon’s popular Hard Disk Manager (HDM) 11 Server for disaster recovery and as a cost-effective tool for system migration and virtualization projects.

With the transition from the 512-byte to the 4k-byte sector storage standard, many drives are experiencing performance degradation between 20 and 40 percent due to partition misalignment. Misalignment can appear under a number of different scenarios. For companies utilizing virtual environments, performance problems are amplified.
“As a leading IT services companies in the U.S., we are in the trenches working side-by-side with our clients and as a result, we are at the forefront for offering only the best software solutions for our customers,” said Rob Flannery, SVP of National Sales “We decided to partner with Paragon because we found their service and products to be top-notch and at an attractive price for our clients.”

“We see many companies struggle with alignment issues,” said Daniel Eickhoff, director of channel sales at Paragon Software Group. “The performance issues are critical, but IT managers are often unfamiliar with the problem of misalignment and unsure about the best course of action to resolve the issue with minimal impact on their organization — our software simplifies the alignment process to get their servers humming at full speed again as quickly as possible.
We are proud to be partnering with Insight Integrated Systems to provide their customers with affordable and proven solutions,” said Eickhoff.

Who May Be Affected by Partition Misalignment?

Computer systems within companies of all sizes are being affected by partition misalignment; whether running one virtual server or 1,000 — if virtual disks are misaligned, applications, databases, etc. are running at sub-optimal performance. Almost every storage device, storage system architecture and application is vulnerable to partition misalignment, including
•       Advanced format (AF) hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs)
•       Database applications, storage virtualization environments, RAID and other distributed data architectures
Problems with misalignment increase as the number of storage devices in the network increases.
Misalignment of the logical partition sectors and actual physical sectors leads to redundant read/write operations, which results in a critical decrease in I/O performance and drive longevity. With the Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) Enterprise Edition, you can quickly and easily align your drive to eliminate these problems. Other available editions are: PAT ESX, PAT Scriptable Staging Edition and PAT NetApp Edition.
HDM 11 Server provides a complete backup and disaster recovery software solution for physical and virtual environments. The product offers the ability to perform instant system recovery and bare-metal restores to dissimilar hardware. HDM includes4K-aware migration and virtualization utilities, as well as advanced partitioning and data-wiping tools.

Paragon Migrate to UEFI advanced migration solution rapidly transfers your computer’s operating system from BIOS boot mode to modern UEFI mode

FREIBURG, Germany – December 7, 2011Paragon Software Group (PSG),the technology leader in innovative data security and data management solutions, today announces the release of Paragon Migrate to UEFI, the advanced PC system migration solution that allows the safe and rapid transfer of software environments from BIOS to Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) platforms within a single computer.  Paragon Migrate to UEFI is a simple four-step wizard that allows novice and advanced home users to adjust and boot their Microsoft Windows systems installed in BIOS mode in the new UEFI boot mode, enabling the support of large-capacity drives (larger than 2Tib) to be used as the primary drive under GPT partitioning schemes.

Home and small-office users who move their 64-bit Windows Vista or Windows 7 software environments from the dated MBR/BIOS configuration to a modern GPT/UEFI platform find that there is no simple way to replace and adjust booting without reinstalling the operating system from scratch.  While Windows Disk Management supports conversion to GPT for empty drives only, there is no way to convert the system drive to GPT without losing any data. Windows Management tools do not provide an option to adjust boot files for UEFI, making it impossible for users transferring established data or system components within a single computer directly from a BIOS boot mode to a UEFI-based mode.

Paragon Migrate to UEFI was especially designed to cover all issues caused by migration to new UEFI-based boot mode, helping users easily transfer their data and significantly simplifying all system migration operations. In four quick steps, users can migrate a physical system to any new hard drive or a modern large-capacity drive, and use this GPT-partitioned disk as a primary boot drive. An easy click-through wizard allows users to select the source MBR system drive for migration to a new (up to 3TB capacity) drive and copy the data while the software automatically adjusts the system.   Paragon Migrate to UEFI works with all 512 sector type drives, both external and virtual.

Key Features of Paragon Migrate to UEFI:

  • Simple, quick transfer of system and data from BIOS to UEFI platform with automated system adjustment and partition reconfiguration;
  • Automatically adjusts the system to operate on UEFI platform;
  • Automatically creates a GPT partitioning scheme during migration;
  • Simple four-step wizard sets up and performs the migration without any loss of data;
  • Supports AFD drives with large capacities (mixed 512/4K sector schemes only, including virtual);
  • Source system remains intact and can be re-loaded in BIOS mode;
·         Copy operation using Windows native VSS technology without restart.

Availability:
Paragon Migrate to UEFI is available for immediate download, free of charge: http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-to-uefi/. As part of the Early Adopter Program, interested parties are invited to run pre-production software to help validate features of the new technology.

Paragon Software's backup and disaster recovery software used by RAND Worldwide for field and classroom laptop protection

Irvine, CA — November 9, 2011 — Software developer Paragon Software Group announced today that RAND Worldwide is using Paragon’s backup and disaster recovery software to protect its remote and classroom laptops. RAND is one of the world’s leading providers of technology solutions and professional services to the engineering community, targeting organizations in the building, infrastructure and manufacturing industries. RAND utilizes laptops both in the field and in their training rooms. As such, they needed backup and disaster recovery software that could provide quick and easy system-restore operations for both scenarios.

For field operations, one of the deciding factors behind selecting Paragon’s software was that the software could hold a backup image within a hidden and protected partition, while minimizing accessibility by anyone but an administrator. “Other software we evaluated required the product to be installed on the machine,” said Doug Dragich, senior systems engineer for RAND Worldwide. “We needed software that would allow us to prevent a user from running the program and changing any of the settings or carrying out unauthorized backups or restores. Paragon’s hidden backup capsule technology ensures the availability and integrity of the backup image, and guarantees a successful and quick restore when it counts.”

Similarly, RAND needed software that could conveniently restore systems back to their original state after each training session. “With a couple of clicks, our training staff can easily and quickly restore a couple of hundred training machines to look just as they did when they were new for the next training session,” said Dragich.

“More and more, companies like RAND Worldwide depend on Paragon Software’s backup and disaster recovery tools to simply and effectively protect their users’ systems and data,” said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. “We are very happy to have such an acclaimed company as RAND join our list of quality clients.”

The Bottom Line

“Paragon’s backup and restore software provided a great way for us to give fast and simple support to our remote employees should their laptops become compromised; as well as quick restores for our training machines,” continued Dragich. “Paragon’s backup and restore software has proven itself many times over with quick, easy and reliable recoveries.”

Backup and Disaster Recovery Software Feature Highlights

Paragon’s backup and disaster recovery solutions offer comprehensive features including disk and file-based backup, differential and incremental backups, bare-metal restore to dissimilar hardware and virtual machines, and a wizard-driven backup scheduler for convenient “set and forget”-type operation. Paragon Software reinforces its support for Mac users with the release of 3 products – Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.5, CampTune X and Virtualization Manager for Mac

FREIBURG, Germany, October 21, 2011Paragon Software Group (PSG), a leader in data backup, disaster recovery, and data migration solutions, today announced the release of three solutions for Mac users working in a dual OS environment or planning to upgrade to OS X Lion – NTFS for Mac ® OS X 9.5, Virtualization Manager for Mac and a beta version of CampTune X

Recognizing users’ desire to combine dual OS environments on their Mac with NTFS and HFS+ volumes on a single drive, get full access to any NTFS volume, and transition smoothly to a virtual environment, Paragon Software has created three utilities addressing needs specific to today’s Mac users. Dual-boot systems running both OS X and Windows do not have built-in utilities for volume resizes, leading to available space shortage barriers on HFS and NTFS volumes. Attempting to retrieve data from devices using an unsupported file system is impossible without specialized drivers.  Even a straightforward upgrade from an older Mac OS to the latest OS X Lion can introduce unforeseen incompatibility issues with the software.

NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5

NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5 is a standalone application for dual-boot users designed to eliminate barriers between Windows and Mac operating systems, and ease data manipulation and data transfer. Simple to install, Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5 adds NTFS file allocation system support to Mac OS X, including OS X Lion, allowing the operating system to access any NTFS-formatted drive. The program provides the safest and fastest way to treat data on NTFS volumes in Mac OS X, and allows partitioning operations with NTFS volumes under Mac OS X.

Key Features include:

§ Updated support of the latest OS X Lion, including 32/64-bit native mode.
§ Support for the latest Thunderbolt devices.
§ Support for extended attributes.
§ Fast volume transfer speed.
§ Full read/write access: Modify existing files, delete files and create or copy new files.
§ No limitation to maximum file/partition size (must be within Mac OS X and NTFS specifications).

CampTune X (Beta)

Many dual-boot users face the problem of resizing partitions as the amount of data – either on HFS or NTFS volumes – increases over time. CampTune X is a next-generation utility that changes volume sizes in dual-boot Mac OS X/Windows systems by adding more space to one volume at the expense of another.  Simple to use, CampTune X is a native utility that adjusts volume size in a few simple clicks without the need to boot to a special environment.

Key Features include:
§ 32/64-bit native mode for OS X Lion.
§ Correctly treats OS X Lion special volume.
§ Simple and convenient user interface.
§ Works directly in OS X. No need to boot a computer into a special environment.

Virtualization Manager for Mac

Upgrading to a new operating system – with potential incompatibilities between the old software and the new environment – can sometimes lead to unpredictable results. For Mac OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard users who wish to upgrade to OS X Lion, creating a virtual clone of a physical machine in order to save an old workplace after upgrading can add some stability to the migration process. Virtualization Manager for Mac is a solution for smooth migration of an Mac OS X environment to a virtual machine, and allows users to create and run a virtual clone of a physical machine that can be used anywhere.  Virtualization Manager for Mac is a standalone application that runs the virtual clone of your OS X-driven environment on another machine without loading into a special environment, or saves it for use as a backup.

Paragon’s convenient, unique utilities bridge a gap between Mac and PC, making it possible to easily treat data on diverse file systems, arrange volumes and prepare combine virtual environments. Paragon Software was the first software developer to implement a full set of drivers with complete read/write access to partitions of any file system – including Paragon NTFS for Linux, HFS+ for Linux, NTFS for Mac, ExtFS for Mac, HFS+ Browser for Windows, and ExtFS Browser for Windows. Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X and HFS+ for Windows are based on Paragon’s own unique Universal File System Driver (UFSD) technology – specifically developed to provide full access (read/write, format, etc.) to volumes of the most popular file systems (NTFS, HFS+, FAT, Ext2/2FS, etc.) under various platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux and DOS).

Availability:

Paragon Software's NTFS for Android driver embedded into Acer ICONIA TAB A500 and ICONIA TAB A501 tablets
Irvine, California and Taipei, Taiwan ROC, October 11, 2011 — Software developer Paragon Software Group and Acer, a world-class provider of IT products, today announced that Paragon’s Universal File System Driver (UFSD) technology was selected to be embedded into Acer’s Android™ Honeycomb-based ICONIA TAB A500 and ICONIA TAB A501 tablets. By adding NTFS support, users can easily transfer music, video, and other data file types between a Windows-formatted storage device and their tablets.

Paragon’s UFSD technology enables systems and devices to have full access to file systems which otherwise would not be supported. Acer is licensing Paragon’s UFSD-based NTFS for Android driver to enhance the capability of their tablets, since most hard drives are formatted for NTFS. Tablets without the Paragon driver require users to first reformat their hard drive to the older FAT file system before they can be used.

The USB port is one of the important features of Acer ICONIA TAB A500-series tablets, because it can be used to attach a hard drive formatted for Windows — thanks to Paragon’s UFSD technology. Users, for example, can download and stream multimedia content to their USB drive, then later move just what they want to take with them onto their tablet and go.
Another key advantage of Paragon’s NTFS for Android driver is that it provides the highest read/write performance possible, which not only minimizes file transfer times between the tablet and the USB drive, but it is also mandatory for providing flawless playback of high definition, Blu-ray quality movies and multimedia content.

“We are very excited to have Acer as a strategic partner and for their innovative ICONIA TAB tablets to include Paragon’s unique USFD technology,” said Tom Fedro, president at Paragon Software Group. “This collaboration seamlessly extends the capabilities of an Android-based device, especially for multi-media applications, helping to ensure end users have a predictable and enjoyable experience with their tablet.”

Paragon Alignment Tool™ 3.0 for ESX® now available for remote partition alignment in the virtual environment

IRVINE, Calif., October 5, 2011Backup and disaster recovery software developer Paragon Software Group released its Paragon Alignment Tool (PAT) ESX version — developed to facilitate partition alignment of virtual systems remotely. PAT ESX requires minimal virtual disk space (only 3 – 4MB per partition) to perform partition alignment with no need for additional space on the system for snapshots or copies of the processed volume. Should an unexpected interruption occur, the alignment operation can be continued without loss of data or need for restoration. The software supports VMware ESX, VMware ESXi, vCenter and vSphere.

“With the growing trend in resource consolidation through virtualization, we are seeing significant increases in the number of virtual servers and workstations,” said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. “Due to the transition of the storage standard from 512B to 4K sectors, the appearance of partition misalignment and performance issues in these systems are increasing. Our customers’ need to resolve these issues drove the development of PAT ESX.”< /div>
PAT ESX is a utility that provides easy and comprehensive management for virtual disk alignment operations. Installed on a virtual machine within the ESX/i environment, management is performed from a Windows XP SP3+ or later operating system. PAT ESX enables access to all virtual disks remotely to check their state and perform alignments in an unattended mode. PAT ESX allows an administrator to browse data stores, select target virtual machines, and then connect to virtual disks to determine whether partition alignment is required. PAT then recommends alignment options if needed.

Partition Alignment Tool Benefits

  • Increase virtual machine operations’ performance up to 300 percent
  • Externally control, manage and align dozens of virtual drives belonging to  different virtual machines (no need to install software on every virtual machine)
  • Decrease hardware costs by eliminating the need to have storage dedicated for migration functions

Paragon Alignment Tool Features

  • Remotely check, control and manage virtual disk alignment
  • Minimal disk space needed to perform alignment
  • No additional server space needed to store snapshots or copies of the processed volume
  • Alignment operation can be continued after an unexpected interruption (restoration not needed; there is no data loss)
  • Provides advanced alignment operation settings (administrator can choose between fast alignment settings or more secure data operations, which may be more time consuming)
  • PAT does not require root access to the server (no need to create new-user accounts); the software works under an existing account with administrator privileges
  • Supports scheduling; VMware ESX, VMware ESXi, and vSphere; and change block tracking (CBT)
  • Ability to set partition alignment software operations according to your needs

“As virtual environments continue to expand in large enterprises, partition alignment is becoming more and more critical to the IT departments that manage them, as any non-aligned system will be the weak link in a virtual setting,” continued Fedro. “PAT ESX is specifically designed with a powerful feature set and easy to use interface to ensure there are no weak links.”

The Partition Alignment Challenge

Virtual hard drives are using page sizes similar to those of found with newer Advanced Format Drives. Misalignment is very common for this type of drive, which results in redundant read/write operations, and critically affects overall performance and (indirectly) hardware lifespan. The same holds true for virtual hard drives — even a simple migration of a virtual machine from one VMware ESX Server to another could end up with a misaligned virtual drive. The situation aggravates when the host’s hard drive and virtual drives are both misaligned — the number of redundant read/write operations doubles.

PAT ESX is the latest edition of Paragon’s popular backup and disaster recovery product line including Hard Disk manager and Drive Backup. Visit the Paragon Software Group Web Site to read more about PAT for ESX.

In case of any data loss, this 11th edition allows PC users to recover their systems from four different emergency environments, such as WinPE 3.0, Linux, DOS or native Windows.

Paragon Backup & Recovery 11 Home is the most cost-effective solution available to home users. It includes the Paragon Adaptive Restore 3.0 feature to safely restore operating systems even on dissimilar hardware, a system migration tool for home Windows environments and P2P Adjustment as standard features. With Paragon Adaptive Restore 3.0, partitions or hard drives can easily be restored and checked if the system boots after migration. If not, the P2P Adjust OS Wizard can be used to adapt an operating system that has been transferred using other software or recovery methods.

The 11th edition of Paragon’s Backup & Recovery Home is the most reliable way to safeguard data with complete disk backup and restore functionality. With user-friendly handling of recovery procedures, Paragon Backup & Recovery 11 Home is not only effective at backing up data, but – more importantly – offers a convenient, comfortable way to restore the system from backup files, even on 2.2 Tb or larger hard drives or on Solid State Drives (SSDs), including the latest Advanced Format Drives (AFDs).

Key new features of Paragon Backup & Recovery 11 Home include:

●     Latest WinPE 3.0 on boot disk – Future-proof backup and recovery software! Containing the Windows 7 Kernel and allowing users to add new drivers, the software guarantees the most reliable recovery process on the market now and in the future.
●     Paragon Adaptive Restore 3.0 – Restore a system backup on completely different hardware, or migrate the operating system to a new computer and avoid time-consuming reinstallations of applications and reconfigurations of your operating system. Paragon Adaptive Restore analyzes which boot drivers are missing on the new hardware and helps install them to the migrated operating system.
P2P Adjust OS Wizard – Start up a Windows physical system on a different hardware platform (P2P) by allowing injection of all required drivers and the other actions crucial for this type of migration. Including the third generation of Paragon’s Adaptive Restore™ technology, it now can:
○     Analyze all installed drivers inside a target system to report on devices without drivers.
○     Search for and install any missing drivers from the built-in Windows repository.
○     Notify the user about boot critical devices without drivers (HDD/RAID controllers, etc.), automatically prompting to provide a path to a driver repository.
○     Name all devices according to their model description, not some alphanumeric code, which requires additional deciphering.
○     Determine and install drivers not only for boot critical devices, but for physically connected NICs as well.
●     Network support for WinPE 3.0 – Easily access backups directly from the Paragon recovery environment, or add network card drivers, if necessary.
●     Support for hard drives bigger than 2.2 TB – Support for the latest generation of hard drives, including SSDs and AFDs, providing support for new GPT partition tables.
●     MBR -> GPT conversion – Easily convert MBR-formatted hard drives to GPT without data loss.
●     Superior write-operations by using asynchronous backup – Increased backup processing speeds, especially for backups on USB 3.0 external hard drives and on internal hard drives.
●     Partition alignment for bare metal restore – When transferring partitions to a new hard drive, Paragon Backup & Recovery 11 Home enables the correct alignment and allows the device to deliver best performance, especially for misalignment issues of restored partitions arising from transfers from old 512-byte sector sizes to newer 4-kilobyte sized sectors.
●     Encrypted Backup – Avoid unauthorized access to backup files with secure encryption.

International Space Station Prime contractor Wyle selects Paragon Software Group for customized, mission critical, disaster recovery solution

IRVINE, Calif., August 30, 2011 – At 11:29 a.m. EDT on July 8, 2011, Paragon Software Group reached a milestone in the company’s brief history as it soared into the heavens on the final flight of America’s Space Shuttle Atlantis. Selected by NASA’s Prime Bioastronautics contractor, Wyle, Paragon’s backup and disaster recovery software, Hard Disk Manager (HDM) 11 Professional now orbits the Earth on the International Space Station. HDM 11 serves as the primary backup and recovery software for the latest generation Ultrasound system also launched on Atlantis.

The International Space Station’s primary goal is to provide a platform for scientific research. Human subject research is managed by Wyle as part of the Bioastronautics Contract. Certification of the next generation ultrasound required being able to successfully restore the new ultrasound system to its launch configuration. Lockheed Martin, one of the subcontractors operating with Wyle, the prime contractor on the Bioastronautics Contract, needed a recovery solution that could meet its stringent specifications. As is often the case with space-related operations, a customized software solution was needed.

“At Paragon, we provide our clients with superior customer service regardless of where they are, now that extends to outer space,” said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. “It was important to Wyle and Lockheed Martin to ensure that the astronauts operating on the Space Station could quickly and easily restore their systems back to an operable state — with the customized version of Hard Disk Manager, they can recover in a matter of minutes without any additional tools.” Paragon developed a custom-restore script that automated the system restore process via a USB-bootable flash drive with the click of a button.

Bioastronautics personnel evaluated several back-up and recovery tools. Of the tools available Paragon’s HDM 11 came closest to meeting the project’s needs. The Paragon team stepped in to close the gap, providing a customized solution which minimized user interaction.

HDM 11 Server provides a complete data backup and disaster recovery solution. A virtual add-on component is available for virtual environments. Both versions offer the ability to perform bare-metal restores, file-level recovery, includes advanced data wiping algorithms, and automatic partition alignment. Additionally, HDM 11 Server enables data back up or migration of an active server with locked volumes, files or folders.
