Backup & Recovery for Mac

Use Cases

Consistent data protection

While working on a specific project, you need regular backups to protect your work progress. With Paragon Hard Disk Manager for Mac, you can create a full image of individual volumes or entire system followed by incremental updates. Processing multiple increments in a backup chain during recovery takes a lot of time. Our solution allows you to merge increment contents with their parent image, and thus you can optimize your existing backup chains. This option can also help to save backup storage space by eliminating obsolete time stamps (see Limitations).

Boot Camp partition resize

If initially allocated space for the Boot Camp Windows partition resulted insufficiently, you can ‘borrow’ some space from your Mac partition and redistribute the unused space between the partitions. All that without restarting a system.

Selective recovery

Lost your email database or any other single file? It would be highly ineffective and time-consuming to restore a whole backup image if you need just one file. With Paragon Hard Disk Manager for Mac, you can selectively extract data from your backup images and dramatically speed up your recovery procedure (see Limitations).

Mac disaster recovery

Your Mac fails to start up due to unknown reasons? Use our bootable recovery media, find out what’s wrong, and get the system back on track or retrieve valuable information from the failed storage device (see Limitations).

Backup to a virtual container

Need to try out new software but you’re concerned it could damage your system? The best solution is to back up your Mac to VMDK and launch it in the VMware Fusion virtual environment. This way, you can decide whether the new software is safe and fits your needs (see Limitations).

Migration and wiping

Want to sell your old Mac? Make a clone of your old disk. With HDM, you can sit back or continue your work while the software resizes partitions and copies data adjusting to the capacity of a new storage device. Once done, wipe your disk to make sure confidential and private data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. The wiping is performed with one of the ten military-grade erasure algorithms. You may also check the SSD Trim option to safely erase on-disk data or remnants of deleted files from solid state drives.

Boot correction

Your Windows Boot Camp won’t start up? Before initiating a recovery from a previous backup image, try our boot correction tools to get it back on track in just a few minutes.

Features

Features Benefits

New Backup & Recovery
APFS Backup APFS containers and volumes backup/restore and copy is not currently supported.
Sector-level imaging Significantly reduces backup and recovery times while improving general performance.
Snapshot onboard Enables to take consistent snapshots of both inactive and in-use partitions, e.g. those that host macOS, providing a coherent state of all open files involved in the process and taking into account that applications may still keep writing to disks.
Full images Helps secure your software environment, including OS, applications and data. Full copies of disks and partitions recover your system to a working state within several minutes.
Core Storage Backup & Restore Supports Core Storage backup and restore including FileVault2 and FusionDrive*.
*Fusion Drives based on APFS are not supported.
OS protection Any Windows or macOS residing on your disks will be detected automatically. Just make your choice and let the program do the rest.
Incremental imaging Minimizes backup storage footprint for several time stamps of the same data.
pVHD support Paragon Virtual Hard Drive removes all limitations of a standard virtual drive format, such as a poor compression ratio, lack of integrity control and encryption capabilities.
Backup destination pVHD images can be saved to a local volume, external storage (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) or a network share.
Fast bare-metal recovery macOS system volumes can be restored from a special bootable USB-flash stick or external disk in one action without the need of re-installing the operating system.
Selective restore You can mount an existing backup image in the read-only mode, thus getting access to its contents through the Finder. This option can help to quickly retrieve individual files without accomplishing a full restore operation.
Multi-platform backup As a backup target, our program supports GPT and MBR disks formatted to any of macOS, Windows, and Linux file systems.
Advanced Partitioning
APFS container resizing Resize your APFS container.
System Integrity Protection (SIP) support Any partition management operations such as create, delete, resize etc. on a system disk are possible even on a system with SIP enabled.
Redistribute free space Increases free space on one partition by utilizing the unused space on the adjacent partition.
Resize/Move partition Enables to move the left or right border of the selected partition, thus not only resizing but moving it on the disk.
Undelete partition Helps to find and recover any lost or accidentally deleted partitions.
Convert partition table Helps to do non-destructive conversion between GPT (GUID Partition Table), MBR (Master Boot Record) or a hybrid GPT+MBR partition table.
Change partition properties Mount or unmount a partition, set it active or inactive, change its identifier (ID), etc.
Rich file system support Create, format, resize, change properties of HFS+, NTFS, ExtFS, FAT and Microsoft exFAT partitions.
Boot Camp Management
Resize Boot Camp Redistributes free space between macOS and Windows OS volumes in Boot Camp with minimal effort.
Easy Windows OS migration Recovers a Boot Camp image on a different Mac computer.
Fix Windows boot issues In case your Windows OS doesn’t boot after replacing a failed hardware device. If you’ve got any other boot issue resulted from a human or program error. Or in case of a boot virus activity — Try out our boot repair tools before taking more radical actions.
Extra Functions
Copy disks and partitions Copy your disk content to a new larger one. Thus, you can fix the issue with insufficient space without reinstalling your OS and applications. Furthermore, this feature can be used to protect your sensitive data (see Limitations).
Data wiping Completely eliminate all information on disk or remnants of deleted files and directories only. Thus, you can make sure that all confidential data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands along with your old disk.
Fix partition problems Checks integrity of a file system to detect and repair errors before copying data or performing drive partitioning.
Boot Media Builder Creates a bootable USB-flash stick or external storage to restore macOS system volumes or accomplish drive partitioning in macOS Mojave. The tool doesn’t delete all information from the drive, so you can write bootable files next to your personal data.
Easy System Integrity Protection disabling Disable System Integrity Protection easily and perform all needed operations with system partitions in macOS.
Software update center Get notifications about new updates and perform them by clicking only one button. That’s all you need to do to keep your software updated.

Limitations

Limitations
  • Backup, Restore and Copy operations are not available for APFS volumes (including system volumes used by macOS 10.14 Mojave and newer versions).
These operations can only be performed on these partitions:

    1. HFS+ (macOS/OS X Extended Journaled) volumes, including System volumes (used by macOS 10.13 High Sierra and previous macOS/OS X versions)
    2. Windows (Microsoft NTFS) partitions, including Boot Camp system partition
    3. other partitions (non-APFS).
  • Recovery Media can only be created in macOS 10.15 Catalina and previous macOS/OS X versions.
  • Supports VDI backup creation is removed from the UI (not implemented in the engine).
  • Disk management and backup operations with NTFS encrypted with the Bitlocker are not supported.
  • A default iCloud Keychain might need to be re-created after a full system recovery.
  • Recovery of a FAT32 volume can be done by default or with a resize up to 32GB, which is the Windows safe size FAT32 limitation.
  • Task scheduling is not included.
  • The convert file system feature is not included.
  • Resizing Microsoft exFAT partitions is not allowed due to the Microsoft exFAT licensing issues.
  • Backup & Restore of a Core Storage configuration to a brand new disk requires additional preparations. Please, read carefully the Knowledge Base article ››
